creating safe spaces to deconstruct gender inequity

women317: vagina dialogues

Every women317 show, we reflect on how we started, where we've been, and what we hope to do in the future. Each show is a labor of love and impossible pull together without the support of our friends and incredible women we work alongside.

Many thanks to Erin Drew and Lisa Berlin of General Public Collective for giving women317 a new home, Ess McKee of INAZ Dezign for designing our logo, Douglas Morris of Old Soul Entertainment for hooking us up with a PA system, DJ This Justin for loaning us turntables, John Franklin Hay of East 10th United Methodist church for letting us borrow chairs, and to every person who donated to our (ongoing) fundraiser

The theme for the show was inspired in name only by the iconic Vagina Monologues. The cross-cultural shortcomings of the famed play gave us space to build upon and continue the conversation about women, gender, and sexuality. Our hope was to provide a space for women to speak freely about our bodies, and every feature artist brought a unique message about the many intersections of womanhood.

Our love and thanks to Rae Parker of S.Parker360 Art & Design for her live painting, Spaceyamz for creating a women317 collage, Beatriz Vasquez of Beatrizdesignz for introducing us to papel picado, and Lacoiya Reed of No Expiration Photography for capturing photos of the event.

And our deepest gratitude to DJ Miss Alicia, musicians Hen and Solo Solution, poets Janna Thomas, Mariah Ivey of The Liberating HER Project and Lauren Hall of Indy Pulse, and each person who shared in the space and supported the feature artists.

women317: misseducation

Thank you for joining us for the fifth women317 show at General Public Collective in Fountain Square to tell our truths about the social conditioning of women and girls!

We loved every feature performing artist:

Tatjana Rebelle
Aisha Tariqa Abdul Haqq
Allyson Horton
Tami J
and Kim Crowder

We appreciate Sarah Boutwell, Photographer and Founder of Re-Generation Indy, Latoya Marlin of Oasis Art Gallery, and Jackie Crofts, Illustrator of Nutmeg for capturing the magic of the evening. And much love to Monique McGuire for providing chair massages for attendees!

women317: the anniversary

On May 1, 2015, we celebrated feminine energies through artistic expression at Tin Comet Coffee. Many thanks to each performer for contributing their gifts to the space: Chantel, Mishara, Sukie, Erin, Krystal, Azieb, Lexycontra, Malikah, and Chenzira.

We captured the magic in photos by Elle (additional photo by JusFam Photography, graphic recording sketch by AprilArt Studios, and digital stills of paintings by Kitty Marie Illustrates) and the entire show is on UStream filmed by Reese. Feel free to share with family and friends and stay tuned for the next women317 this summer!
